Houwhoek Pass runs between the railway line and N2, connecting the Houwhoek Hotel to the small town of Botrivier in the Overberg. It presumably functioned as a service road to the railway line which is no longer active as far as I know. Few people know about this road and even fewer use it which makes for a far more interesting and fun alternative to the highway. I always take this gravel detour on the bike and generally stop at the Houwhoek padstal for refreshments (whether before or after).
I filmed this on Sunday 2 October 2025, the day before the Wines2Whales mountain bike race passed through the same route, albeit in the opposite direction. I may or may not have left some deep ruts in the sand 🤭
The track features a healthy mix of compacted gravel, sandy patches, off-camber corners as well as rocky & washed-out sections. This is not the TET nor the BDR.
