The friendliest people I've ever met: the Eastern Cape Highlands folk deserve some sort of an award!
We unknowingly trespassed private land following the humpy road to the Telkom mast at the top of the mountain. There we found a soft-spoken, smiling farmer and his workers repairing their fences. Incredible views in every direction. Once we got chatting, he explained that the farm directly bordered on Lesotho and that if his cattle wandered onto the neighbouring land, they'd be gone forever.
He also explained that the mast is located on the Lesotho side and how this came to be. Negotiations allegedly failed after the appointed Telkom official refused to pay a nominal amount for erecting a tower on their property, instead opting to pay the local chief on the an inordinate sum of money to place the tower a handful of meters Lesothoward.
We enjoyed the ride all the more having gained greater awareness and context of our surroundings.
Joubert's Pass is super fun and flowy. A non-technical summit with many twists & bends. This is the gateway to the majestic Eastern Cape Highlands from the lovely little town of Lady Grey.
