Motorcycle Adventure at 4,800m | Extreme Altitude in the Andes
In this episode of our motorcycle adventure through South America, we discover that crossing the border from Argentina into Chile doesn’t bring the relief we expected.
Already riding above 4,200 metres, we assume the road will finally begin to descend. Instead, it keeps climbing — pushing us to an incredible 4,800 metres, one of the highest points of our entire journey.
As the altitude increases, the effects become impossible to ignore. Breathlessness, tingling hands, and the relentless thin air turn this ride into a quiet physical and mental challenge, even with altitude sickness medication onboard.
Surrounded by the vast emptiness of the high Andes, we ride through surreal landscapes, remote desert plateaus, and eventually find an unexpected reward: natural hot springs at extreme altitude, a rare moment of warmth and recovery in an otherwise harsh environment.
This episode continues our long-distance motorcycle travel series across South America, following remote routes far from the tourist trail and showing what it’s really like to ride motorcycles at extreme elevation.
