Day Two of Bloodline: Three Generations on Two-Wheels
An eventful ride from Badplaas to Hazyview. My dad on his KTM 950 Adventure and my nephew and I on a friend's KTM 990 Adventure - thank you (and sorry) Wayne! 😬
Notable:
My dad drops his bike on an off-camber incline, loses some coolant and floods the carbs in the process. Riding momentarily halted.
Without warning, my nephew and I wipeout on a remote forestry road. The gravel was freshly coated in super slimy tar-like substance which rendered the riding surface an ice rink. There were no cautionary signs. Riding halted swiftly.
Ever encountered gravel roads covered in this tarry substance? What is it?
We pick up an issue on my dad's bike - cracked engine case. Explainer: the 950/990 was designed with it's side-stand bolted directly into the side of the engine case. Catch something of substance on your side-stand and you could end up with a cracked engine case. A real design flaw on these bikes. This still baffles me however as the bike has a side-stand relocator bracket fitted and we did no technical riding the day prior. Sidebar: I can highly recommend Alcolin steel epoxy. It comes in a greyish/silver spherical tube and works incredibly.
