It’s time to take on one of the riskiest roads in the world on a motorcycle! This is part 5 in a multi part Himalayas motorcycle adventure riding the Royal Enfield Himalayan and today we take on Umling La Pass in India.
Day 5 being our marathon motorcycle day. In this episode we have a good distance to achieve and a very high risk and noticeable mountain pass to do within the 386km days target distance. Like all routes across the Himalayas, there is very little certainty on the road conditions you’re going to face. We’ve been using multiple data points to triangulate the best route plan, but the conditions change so quickly on the ground that you have to plan for the unexpected.
The aim of the day was to get from Nyoma over to the Photi La pass and then descend to start the Umling La. Umling La is the highest motorised road in the world, reaching 19,024 feet /5,798m - sailing higher than Everest base camp and only 12m lower than the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. The air density at the top is sub 50% of sea level oxygen levels. Having spent multiple days gradually increasing our altitude and progressively enhancing our exposure to the risk of altitude sickness we were still unsure if the three of us would make it to the top. It’s amazing things like getting all of your kit off to go pee can completely take your breath away with such low oxygen levels.
The good news is we made it! Officially conquered the highest pass in the world that’s acceptable with a motorised vehicle! 💪 India you’re an incredible country to ride and to do it with such heritage on a Royal Enfield is just perfect.
