After a string of box office bombs, the director of Snatch took a massive risk by making a Disney live action musical his children could watch.
Casting the lead delayed production by four months until unknown actor Mena Massoud was chosen, enduring a brutal prep phase of singing, juggling, camel riding, and scuba diving. Meanwhile, Will Smith was terrified to follow Robin Williams' legendary performance, ultimately infusing the Genie with his own hip hop flavor.
The team built Agrabah from scratch in Wales, shot in the deserts of Jordan, and orchestrated the biggest musical number in film history. By strapping GoPros to actors and using robotic factory arms for magic carpet flights, Ritchie turned this street thief story into a $700 million hit.
